Bus Stop

Bus stop, wet day, she’s there, I say
Please share my umbrella
Bus stop, bus goes, she stays, love grows
Under my umbrella

All that summer we enjoyed it
Wind and rain and shine
That umbrella, we employed it
By August, she was mine

Every morning I would see her waiting at the stop
Sometimes she’d shopped and she would show me what she bought
Other people stared as if we were both quite insane
Someday my name and hers are going to be the same

That’s the way the whole thing started
Silly but it’s true
Thinkin’ of a sweet romance
Beginning in a queue

Came the sun the ice was melting
No more sheltering now
Nice to think that that umbrella
Led me to a vow

Every morning I would see her waiting at the stop
Sometimes she’d shopped and she would show me what she bought
Other people stared as if we were both quite insane
Someday my name and hers are going to be the same

Bus stop, wet day, she’s there, I say
Please share my umbrella
Bus stop, bus goes, she stays, love grows
Under my umbrella

All that summer we enjoyed it
Wind and rain and shine
That umbrella, we employed it
By August, she was mine

Yes, this is one of my favourite all time pop songs, not just from the sixties, but from any era and Mona and Lisa completely blew my mind with both their recording and performance in the oh so funny video! I have posted previously on this subject as follows: “Would you believe that I also heard one word in the Hollies’ ‘Bus Stop’ incorrectly for over fifty years before the penny dropped after hearing the MonaLisa Twins’ cover and thought that Lisa’s pronunciation of ‘waiting’ seemed a little strange. Beautiful and cute with her lovely German accent, but not quite right. I googled the lyrics and for the first time since 1966 realised that Graham Gouldman’s lyrics were NOT ‘Bus Stop waiting’. I kid you not!”

Graham seems to have borrowed from the Beatles’ “Things We Said Today” just a tad. Hmm! Is there a MLT cover of this beautiful Paul McCartney song out there somewhere?

Thank you so much for sharing the brilliant lyrics with us! There would be many artists today who wish they could write as well. Hang on … I do believe there is an excellent album around with the odd name of ‘Orange’, written and recorded by a contemporary band called MLT. How lucky we are that such classic pop song writing has been revived in such an awesome and fab way!

“Bus stop, wet day, she’s there, I say” – How good is this as the first line of a song!
